READIN

Jeremy's journal

I was born with a mind that suffers from the incurable disease of worrying precisely about what could or might have been.

🦋 Old Notebook, New Notebook

mariasabina
la foto es de María Sabina
I did it! Over the past year or so, and for the first time in my life, I have filled a notebook, a yellow pad, with ideas towards poetry and fiction (much of which I have been revising and posting here) and am moving directly into a new notebook -- what has generally happened in the past is that I would start keeping a notebook and... lose interest over a couple of months' and/or pages' span...

This new notebook (which I bought at the same market in Oaxaca where I bought my favorite shoes ever, highly recommend it) is gorgeous! Hard covers and thick soft, recycled paper allow me to write on facing pages, unlike the yellow pad. So I am starting a project writing a bilingual text, Spanish on the left and English on the right like a parallel translation, but rather than the same text in both languages, it is two separate threads of a narration: The left is poetry by The Modesto Kid, the right is my character Peter's journals during his time translating that poetry. This is the idea I'm working towards anyway, I haven't quite managed yet to get the ideas to cohere properly. I will hopefully be posting drafts of some of this here in the weeks to come (if all goes according to plan...); a beginning is in comments to this post.

poem from TMK's blog
transfigurado:
se han muerto cuando eramos joven --
y los ya olvido

from Peter's journal
I'm sitting on a bench at the corner of 4th and San Mateo, and my coffee's getting cold while I stare at this poem.

A bus drives by. As it passes, I look up across the street at the Whole Foods where Laura is shopping, she'll be coming out soon. I was going to translate this poem while she was shopping but all I've got to show for the time is a couple different versions of the first line, none clearly better than the others, and a convincing snippet from the middle. I feel outside myself, upset about work, unable to focus. The poet is "howling dispassionate,/ over my friends, dead in the streets of Modesto;/ tranfixed:" and I'm feeling that dispassionate almost breathless howl but not sure how to get it onto the page.

There are some things I feel I cannot write about even here. But then how am I to translate them (if the need arises)? This seems like a handicap.

Allen's howl for Carl echoes
in the naked street, I hear it
hysterical
will find my own voice
my own way of howling, kind
of dispassive, dismissive mourning sigh
for my friends dead in the streets of Modesto,
transfixed:
they died when we were young --
I've already forgotten them

Pulled the María Sabina notebook off the shelf this weekend and got some alright-sounding stuff from it. Check it out:

Nací en Modesto y allí he crecido
No en Santiago ni en Nueva York
No en el DF ni en LA

Si puedes oír, escucha. Si puedes
escuchar, cavila. Ve. Repara.

Que hable ahora o calle
para siempre
dice el juez.
Usted dice:
estoy en busca de razón
para continuar
y baja la mirada. Se calla.
La sala del tribunal
se disuelve
y el viento responde:
Escucha las hojas que tiemblan
y caen.
Cigarras. Los pájaros. Silbidos
de los trenes. No te preocupes.
Te dejas inspirar por los pulmones
gigantes
de la tierra, del viento
pulmones temblando ya
desde antes
del universo.

Naceré

Subiré a nacer contigo herman@ poeta

Vos encontráis en un césped. Un amigo
hace introducciones. Acordáis
encontrarvos más tarde.
Vos encontráis en unas catacumbas.
Un esquéleto cae del osuario.
Vos encontráis en un café, hay solamente
una mesa no ocupado.
Decidís comer juntos.
Vos encontráis es un seminar. Alrededor
de vosotros pierde
todo el mundo la punta,
pero lo veis.
Salís y habláis largas horas
durante el café.
Vos encontráis en un camping:
habéis sacos de dormir
de la misma marca.
Vos encontráis como palabras
en un frase corto.

Largo tiempo
estaba de pie
en la calle
enfrente del teatro
esperando de que se termine
esa acción
pero apenas
había comenzado

ahora estoy en mi habitation
esperando
de que se termine de llover
mientras suena

Harto encendió Miguel cigarillo y sonrió a Rico, molesto.
