Barbara Ehrenreich [Oh my gosh! Barbara Ehrenreich has a blog!! It's close to a year old.] explains the Socialist International Conspiracy to destroy the economy. Things were going swimmingly until about a week ago, when the capitalists suddenly staged a counter-coup. We had thought that the nationalization of the banks would bring capitalism to its knees, but instead, the capitalists were craftily using it to privatize the government. ...Ah well, we socialists still have the election to look forward to. After months of studying the candidates' economic plans, we have determined that one of them, and only one, can be relied on to complete the destruction of capitalism. I finished Nickeled and Dimed last night, what a wonderful book that is! It really opens up a world I don't see much of from day to day. The writing style is exceptionally up front and lucid; all Ehrenreich's cards are on the table. Bill said to me the other night that the book should be required reading in the run-up to the election. I agree completely.

Reading Nickeled and Dimed on the train this morning. I feel a lot of sympathy for Ms. Ehrenreich -- plus, she has a marvelous sense of humor. Some things it makes me think about: the summer I spent washing dishes (1987 or 88, I forget which); my own class consciousness and how it affects my relations with people around me; the relative ease of my current employment. I feel a bit guilty about having commandeered the book while Ellen is still reading it; but she is doing most of her reading at night, when I will be back home and it will be available for her.

So here is the plan for the next few weeks, reading- and woodworkingwise: On the train to and from work, I am going to be reading After the New Economy by Doug Henwood until I finish it, then Nickeled and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, which I bought today for Ellen -- I believe she will be finished with it by the time I want it. Come home in the evening, play with Sylvia, have dinner, recreate, put Sylvia to bed. Then I will go downstairs and work on a dust collection harness for my lathe -- or when that is finished, on Ellen's bookcase or turning projects. Then come back up and read Don Quixote for an hour or so before bed. This makes it difficult to figure when I will post my reactions to DQ but I will try and make some room for that as well.
