I have recently, after months of meaning to, started learning to sharpen my tools. (Some of them really need it!) I'm starting with chisels and planes, and will leave the more complex edges (saws, drill bits, etc.) for the time being. I set up a Scary Sharp sharpening station, which is sandpaper on top of a hard flat surface. I'm using a granite tile for my surface, and starting with grits 220, 320, and 600. I will need to get some finer grits forthwith, at least 1000 and 4000 if I can find it. My first results have been quite encouraging -- a shiny edge comes up very fast.
