Let me explain the "I" and its relationship with Lola. I don't think of myself as speaking for Lola, but rather, that I attempt to interpret her behavior to better understand her and what she needs. But Lola often confounds me, in sometimes delightful ways. I was sleeping, on my back, with my arms straight down against my body and my palms faced up. When I awoke, Lola's head was resting in my hand. It felt warm and soft, endearing beyond my imagination. Another time recently, Lola came back from the groomer, exhausted, and fell asleep as soon as she jumped up on the bed and made herself comfortable. Jeremy and I were watching her, as her body sighed and sunk deeper into sleep. "Helloooooo..." Jeremy said, half kiddingly. We've seen Lola in heavy sleep countless times, but I couldn't recollect talking to her while she slept. As he spoke, her tail started to wag up and down, while her heavy breathing continued. Had he 'discovered' a new trick that our Lola could perform? Wagging and sleeping at the same time? But what  makes me continue to smile when I conjure that picture in my head, is that like the friend who is not only ready to, but wants to laugh at your jokes, this is a playful dog, even in sleep.
