🦋 Vacation pictures

Ellen and I spent the past week in Mexico City -- our first vacation by ourselves since 2001! A great time, wandering through the neighborhoods and the parks -- the above picture is from the courtyard of the Palacio Nacional, on our first day there; click through for many more photos.

I surprised myself by being able to speak Spanish a little more clearly and correctly than I thought I would be able to, and by not being able to understand spoken Spanish quite as well as I thought I would be able to. We both got a lot of practice with speaking and understanding the language.

🦋 Sleep-away

We dropped Sylvia off today for her first vacation away from home -- she's spending the next two weeks at Journey's End Farm Camp in Sterling, PA. Here she is with her bunkhouse counselor Michaela, in the sunflower patch just outside her door... (Click the image for more camp photos.)

🦋 Concert Photo

Here I am playing with The Lost Souls last week at the South Orange Elks' Club. (Thanks for the picture, dad!) Mike and Eric are to my left, Jon is behind me; other members are cropped or obscured.

🦋 Sand Castles

Thanks to a note at The Wooster Collective, I see that Hampton Beach, NH held its annual sand-castle competition last week; pictures of the winning sculptures are up at hamptonbeach.org. My favorite is Marielle Heesels' entry, "Drowning in Love":

🦋 The Long Weekend

Some of the nicest weather we've had all month, yesterday and today. John and I played music for a long time yesterday afternoon, sitting out in the sunny, mild backyard; then Andrea came over and we barbecued some chicken and hot dogs, and all in all it was just about the perfect spring/summer evening.

And the weekend continues! Happy Memorial Day, everyone -- Bob and Janis are coming over to jam for a while this afternoon.

🦋 Happy Birthday, Jeremy

So I your host begin my fifth decade this morning. A lot has happened for Ellen and me during my fourth decade: Sylvia came to be a part of our family; we moved from Queens to South Orange, and bought our house; I changed jobs a couple of times; Sylvia grew older; I started playing violin; we made lots of new friends and lost contact with some old friends; Sylvia grew older... A big thing for me in my fourth decade had been the establishment of this blog. (Thanks for reading it!)

I'm sort of taken aback by what a long time ten years is. (Let alone forty years! I can't even begin to grasp that duration of time. And yet I have lived it.) Looking forward to lots happening in the next ten...

🦋 In the garden

One of the nicest, most springlike days of 2010 so far. Here are some photos:

🦋 Spring colors

A rainy April day today... I took some pictures of flowers on our block -- though the colors are more satisfying when the sun is shining on them, there's something to be said for the way they offset the grayness, too.

This morning was Spring cleaning (Spring cleaning has been stretching out, a little bit each weekend; our house and yard are looking much better though our nerves are getting a little frayed...) and reading, music with Bob and Janis in the afternoon.
