The READIN Family Album
Me and Sylvia (April 4, 2002)

READIN

Jeremy's journal

The alternatives are not placid servitude on the one hand and revolt against servitude on the other. There is a third way, chosen by thousands and millions of people every day. It is the way of quietism, of willed obscurity, of inner emigration.

J.M. Coetzee

Every time I see this Saramago quote: "The gate is wide open, the madmen escape." at the top of my blog, I hear it sung to the tune of "Away in the Manger". Not that useful but there you have it.

I don't come here often enough. Back when Saramago won the Nobel, somebody put a few pages of "Blindness" on the web. I read them and thought, I ought to read that book. The thought has occurred to me since, but your posts on the subject will send me to B&N tomorrow. Thanks!
