Hmmm, yes. There's a lot more to be written about the Spanish Civil War. Stephen Koch mentioned the theft in Double Lives--maybe he has some footnotes that lead to more extensive material. I have the impression that the Spanish Civil War really has yet to be digested as history; the issues are still too live, even now, for historical analysis. On the other hand, I doubt that any native speaker of English would now be granted access to the Kremlin archives necessary for research.

Looks like an interesting book.
In this Wyden book I am encountering a lot of stories that I'm sort of surprised to be unfamiliar with -- like they seem like the kind of war stories that make up national legends, like Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie kind of stuff. Well obviously I'm not Spanish, perhaps they are part of the Spanish national consciousness in that way.
(Also they are much darker than most American national legends I can think of -- might not lend themselves to myth-making in the same way. I guess this is why I'm surprised not to know about them, they're the kind of things I would expect writers like Pynchon and Vonnegut to use. Maybe as I get more familiar with European and specifically Spanish novelists, I will start seeing more references to this stuff.)
