READIN

Jeremy's journal

The very idea of the (definitive) translation is misguided, Borges tells us; there are only drafts, approximations.

🦋 ¡Hagamos idioma!

Cuentista, son tus palabras
El idioma y nada más.
Cuentista, no hay idioma,
Se hace idioma al contar.
Al contar se hace el idioma,
Y al recordar las pasajes contadas
Se oye el relato que nunca
Se ha de volver a narrar.
Cuentista no hay idioma
Sino espuma sobre las aguas.

Storyteller, it's your words
Make up the language, nothing more.
Storyteller, there is no language;
Language is built up from stories.
From stories, our language is built;
And remembering the tales recounted,
We hear a story that you'll never
Get another chance to relate.
Storyteller, there is no language,
Just foam on the waters.
