READIN

Jeremy's journal

Dream is not a revelation. If a dream affords the dreamer some light on himself, it is not the person with closed eyes who makes the discovery but the person with open eyes lucid enough to fit thoughts together. Dream -- a scintillating mirage surrounded by shadows -- is essentially poetry.

Michel Leiris

🦋 At Howell Farm

I cranked out a couple tunes at the NJ Fiddle Contest at Howel Farm. (to wit, Halting March and The Rd to Lisdoonvarna) -- My strategy of practicing everything a shade slower than it should be performed has really paid off.

(On the other hand, of course, I realize now that I've been recording these songs at practice speed rather than performance -- I should record a new version of the Halting tape.)

🦋 La isla de los alcatraces

No Dress Rehearsal Rag this week, we hope to put a nice performance together Memorial Day weekend...

The READIN family went on vacation this weekend to see sister Miriam get married, congratulations, Miriam! The next day we took the ferry to Alcatraz for some exploration... I've never gone there before and was more blown away by the stark physical beauty of the place than interested in the history of the prison. Some pix at the family album:

Also took a very nice walk through North Beach, but alas no pictures, phone was dead.

🦋 Out in the back yard

Spring is without question here; and we got a ping-pong table! Here are Ellen and Sylvia volleying.

Sylvia and I put it together yesterday afternoon; but we took a break so John and I could do some jamming. A new setup means I'm not sure yet where to set up the camera; and the upshot is that I'm mostly just out of the frame, a disembodied Stroh fiddle. Shades of February! We ran out of tape at what seems to me like a pretty opportune moment.

Let's Play Outside!

  1. Waiting for the Man (Lou Reed)
  2. Running to Stand Still (U2)
  3. Arms of Love (Robyn Hitchcock)/
    Boys of Bluehill (trad)
  4. Halting March (trad)
  5. outtakes from an embarrassingly bad rendition of She Said She Said (Lennon-McCartney)
  6. The Needle and the Spoon (Skynyrd)
  7. Singin Everybody's Song But My Own (John)
  8. St. James Infirmary (trad)
  9. Drowsy Maggie (trad)/Dancing Barefoot (Patti Smith)
  10. Red Overalls (Jeremy)
  11. Will the Circle be Unbroken (trad)
  12. Shortnin' Bread (trad)/Hip Shake (Slim Harpo via the Stones)

🦋 Reflected in the water

We spent some time this afternoon walking around the Great Swamp Preserve -- just spectacular this time of year, and few people. Lots of photos of the still waters at the link; and two videos.

🦋 Shadow and halo

Late evening on Meeker Street:

You have to look at it for a while to make them out, but there are some interesting patterns in the blackness. The image is my neighbor's house across the street, a tree in his front yard, and behind his house a light shining on the westbound platform at Mountain Station. There is enough of a mist in the air to give the lamp a nice halo.
