🦋 Out in the back yard

Spring is without question here; and we got a ping-pong table! Here are Ellen and Sylvia volleying.

Sylvia and I put it together yesterday afternoon; but we took a break so John and I could do some jamming. A new setup means I'm not sure yet where to set up the camera; and the upshot is that I'm mostly just out of the frame, a disembodied Stroh fiddle. Shades of February! We ran out of tape at what seems to me like a pretty opportune moment.

Let's Play Outside!

  2. Running to Stand Still (U2)
  3. Arms of Love (Robyn Hitchcock)/

  8. St. James Infirmary (trad)
  9. Drowsy Maggie (trad)/Dancing Barefoot (Patti Smith)

🦋 Bookshopping

Me and Sylvia spent the afternoon in Maplewood yesterday, we went down to [words] bookstore looking to add to her collection of Tintin books (she picked up The Seven Crystal Balls and, hence, will be back soon for Prisoners of the Sun) and came away with some unexpected but promising finds; and went over to the pizzeria to eat some ices and read. I found two books that just demanded for me to own them based on their mere existence -- it seems like there is no way for me to coexist in a world which contains the book The Adventures of Hergé without owning a copy of it; and similarly for the new Penguin edition of Graves' Greek Myths, with an introduction by Rick Riordan. (The bookshop has unaccountably categorized the latter as a "Graphic Novel" -- this worked out well as that was the section I was browsing in.)

We spent some time this morning reading Graves' take on The Gods of the Underworld, comparing the details to the stories she knows from Riordan's novels...

🦋 Three musicians, two dancers

Ellen and Sylvia met me at the museum this evening after work. Saw some great paintings together and got some nice photos of each other -- click through to see a couple more.

🦋 Almuerzo

Sylvia and I went down the street to La Galera for lunch today -- tasty... Now I am floating on a pillow of pupusas and pollo guisado and rice and beans.

🦋 Unexpected Muumishittiä

Sylvia got a lovely birthday present from my parents, a bunch of merch from Moomin Shop, in Finland. A "Little My" nightgown, a mug with a likeness of Moominmamma, copies of "The Book About Moomin, Mymble, and Little My" in both English and Finnish -- Sylvia and I spent a little while watching this (beautiful) 2009 production of "Kuinkas Sitten Kävikään?" and reading along...

🦋 Happy Birthday, Sylvia!

Good, silly, fun: following a pack of hyperactive sixth-graders around the mini golf course all afternoon. Summer is over, autumn is just starting, and the weather was perfect for the party. After we played 18 holes, came back home for pizza and ice cream. A fine way to ring in the opening of Sylvia's twelfth year.

🦋 A menu

Ellen is going out for dinner tonight with Lisa; Sylvia and I are going to cook a nice dinner for ourselves.

Rigatoni with sausage and spinach

Simplest dinner around. Saute some onions and garlic with fennel seeds, cook the sausage in the same pan, add some spinach leaves and wilt them. Toss with pasta, serve with some grated cheese. (We have some asiago on hand that will be very nice with this.) Sylvia and I are going over to the grocery store in a little while to pick up some spinach and some artichokes to serve on the side. (I asked if she wanted artichoke hearts and she said, "I want the outside part of the artichoke, the kind you scrape off with your teeth.")

Apple-blackberry gratin

(recipe based on one found in this week's NY Times Magazine)
  • 3 sliced apples (unpeeled)
  • Blackberries
  • Sugar
  • Cornstarch
  • Butter
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Honey
  • Cinnamon
  • Walnuts
Toss sliced apples and blackberries with 1 teaspoon each of sugar and cornstarch. Sauté in 1 Tablespoon of butter for 10 minutes. Spread in a 9-by-13-inch pan with some walnuts.

Whisk together sour cream, milk, vanilla extract and honey to taste, and 1 tsp cornstarch. Sprinkle over apples.

Broil 4 to 6 inches from the flame until lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
